Observatory Overview
Overview of the Skillscapes Observatory
The Skillscapes Observatory provides detailed information on Greece's tourism markets, framing them within the broader European Economic Area context. Both tourism's supply (e.g., capacity, labour) and demand (e.g., arrivals, guest nights) are considered. Both conventional accommodation (i.e., hotels) and platform-mediated short-term rentals are included. The tourism industry is framed within the broader economic environment through data regarding economic output (e.g., GDP, GVA) and investment (e.g., GFCF). The Observatory places increased emphasis on labour markets, containing detailed data on sectoral specializations, labour conditions, and workforce skills. The level of analysis is granular where possible, with data referring to national and regional levels (NUTS 1, NUTS 2, NUTS 3, and geographical units). The Observatory is divided into four pages: EU economy, Greek tourism, EU tourism overview, and EU labour & skills. The EU economy page contains data on economic performance and investment across the European Economic Area and associated countries. On each page, the following sections appear: an interactive map that visualizes the selected variable across the entire study area (the broader European Economic Area or Greece, depending on the page), a detailed data section for a specific region chosen on the map, a data table on the selected variable, and a comparative section that visualizes the diachronic evolution of selected measures for multiple regions.
Specifically, the interactive map appears at the top of each page. Choose the variable, geographical level, and year to visualize the respective data. Important note: The selected variable and geographical level define the information presented across the entire page.
By clicking on a region in the interactive map, the selected region section appears below the map. There, additional information is provided, namely the selected variable's values for the selected year, the region’s ranking within the country and Europe, and a baseline graph. In the baseline graph, the selected metric’s evolution can be visualized over selected time periods, with the option of using the start year (which varies for different variable types) as a reference year.
The information visualized on the interactive map can be presented as a table by clicking “Show data table” in the Data section below. Choose the territorial unit, country, and start and end years, or search directly for a specific region to generate a detailed data table. The data can be downloaded for offline use.
Lastly, in the comparative section, a baseline graph visualizes the evolution of the selected indicator for multiple regions. Select the regions of interest, choose the time frame, and view results either as net values or with the start year as the reference year. Comparison data can also be downloaded for offline use.
More information regarding the variables and their significance is provided on each page.
